Deschutes Brewery: Welcome to Portland!

Grand Opening
Friday, May 2
210 NW 11th Avenue, Portland

Deschutes opens a full brewery and restaurant this Friday in Portland. Located in a beautiful old building in the Pearl, the brewpub has almost a lodge-like feel with its massive reclaimed timber beams and intricate wood carving by Oregon artist J. Chester Armstrong.

The daring and diverse menu includes ingredients from a few of Edible Portland's favorite producers, including goat cheese from Juniper Grove and greens from Siri Farms. The brewpub also features house-baked breads and pretzels and house-cured prosciutto.

I might stop by tomorrow night for the NW mushroom pizza or house-made veggie burger, but I'm staying for the beer. I tasted their fresh-from-the-tap Black Butte Porter the other day, and it was heavenly.

Welcome Sweetpea Baking Company! Portland's first vegan bakery

VEGAN – QUALITY – ORGANIC – DELISH

Sweetpea Baking Company – its cookies, cupcakes and cheesecakes long a staple for vegan and non-vegan Portlanders alike – has now opened a café and bakery at 1205 SE Stark (next door to Herbivore Clothing Company and Food Fight! Vegan Grocery).

Recently for breakfast, I munched on a Kettleman bagel slathered with strawberry “cream cheese,” a rich slice of zucchini bread (one of their most popular items), and – my favorite – a monster-sized, gooey cinnamon roll. All vegan, all goodness, and all washed down with a cup of Stumptown coffee. Soon, savory breakfast and lunch items will also be offered.

Owner and master baker Lisa Higgins uses organic ingredients, and she is expanding into gluten-free and wheat-free baked goods.

If wedding bells are in your future, I highly recommend talking to Lisa about baking your wedding cake. My husband and I chose two-tier chocolate for ours, decorated with edible flowers and blueberries. The guests didn’t know it was vegan – and I doubt they would have cared!

This $25 3-course meal (plus complimentary glass of wine - Hello! Best deal of the year.) will feature local, seasonal ingredients and could become a once monthly event.

Toast for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Donald Kotler showing off the "All Day Burger", served on toast.

Edible Portland recently visited Toast, a new restaurant in the Woodstock neighborhood. Owner Donald Kotler opened Toast with the goal of serving great food sourced locally at reasonable rates to his neighbors. See below a partial list of Oregon and Washington farms and business that make regular deliveries to the small restaurant.

The staff at Toast is quite busy. They not only bake everything from scratch, they preserve jams and sauces, braise, pickle, cure, make pasta, and cut the whole darn pig.

There's no need for vegetarians and vegans to feel out of place at Toast. The menu will eventually expand to include more veggie items, and in the meantime, the cooks are itching to create a special meal just for you if the current choices don't strike your fancy.

Details:
Toast, 5222 SE 52nd Ave, Portland

Portland food cart phenomenon - and a handy, practical guide

How does one even attempt to keep track of all the food carts that make up the Portland lunchtime, late-night, economy-food scene? Thankfully, there is a new blog devoted to keeping up with those highly mobile restaurants-on-wheels:

www.foodcartsportland.com

There are many carts yet to be reviewed, but it's a start.

Visiting local food carts is a great way to support a local business trying to get its foot in the door of the restaurant biz. Some carts have grown into full-blown favorite restaurants.

Tiendas, Carnicerías and Taquerías: Where to get the goods in Woodburn

Read Kelly Myers' article about Woodburn, Oregon's cultural and economic shift here. Below are a few of her favorite downtown businesses...

CARNICERIA FIN DE SEMANA
Contrary to its name, which literally means “end of the week meat market,” Fin de Semana is open all week long. There are many cuts for carne asada, or grilling. It’s hard to miss the razor-thin cross-section of beef chuck that’s the size of a throw pillow. Pig’s feet are cut crosswise in three places, but not all the way through, so cooks can snap off a piece at a time. The butchers are solicitous.

MEXICO LINDO
As the first Hispanic business in Woodburn, Mexico Lindo has been open for more than 30 years. Even so, its tacos retain the kind of casual perfection found more typically at taco carts—the tortillas are tender, the meat is savory, and a line of chopped onion, lime and cilantro runs down the middle. Menudo is served on weekends.

SALVADOR'S BAKERY
Shop here for everything from Mexican cheeses and house-made jerky to minutes-old chicharrónes and churros. Soft drinks in glass bottles are imported from Mexico, where they are made with cane sugar, not corn syrup. The selection of salsas may lure you to return as much as its carnitas and huaraches.

Tried agretti? Don't miss Café Castagna's delectable lunch

Earlier this week, we had quite the Portland food experience. We were invited to sample from Café Castagna's new lunch menu. The meat-eaters at the table started with agretti and shrimp salad and continued with sliders and fries, the Italian sandwich, and house-made potato chips. Wonderful comments were heard round the table.

Agretti, a mild-flavored Italian green

Meanwhile, the vegetarian chowed down on THE best salad of her life: butter lettuce salad with vinaigrette royale. (I'm not just saying this to get your attention. It was, literally, the best salad I have ever eaten.) I then sipped on ten treasure soup and was able to find around eight of them. The meat-eaters glanced jealously toward my bowl.

Lunch ended with a choice of chocolate, strawberry or vanilla milkshakes, but not before Chef Kevin Gibson ran outside to pick up his farm-fresh delivery of porcini mushrooms from Gene Thiel's Prairie Creek Farm for that evening's dinner. Co-Owners Kevin Gibson and Monique Siu actively support local farmers in their quest to bring fresh, seasonal ingredients into Castagna's kitchen.

Café Castagna is open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
