Edible Portland's summer cover story "Hand Picked" explores the realities of farm labor in Oregon, where we employ nearly 90,000 migrant and seasonal workers to bring in summer’s bounty. The story doesn’t cast villains and victims, but instead shows the thorny complexities of farm labor.
This event, The Hands That Feed Us, will begin with a viewing of the 10-minute documentary, Children in the Fields — An American Problem, produced by the Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs. Following the video, we will continue the conversation on how to build a food system that is fair, affordable and legal for farmworkers and farmers alike.

Comments
On behalf of the Oregon Farm Worker Ministry, I want to thank Edible Portland and Slow Food Portland for the timely topic slated for the Aug 20 event. Sustainable agriculture, food security and safety, labor rights and work site considerations for farm workers are linked inextricably especially in Oregon, one of six states in the nation employing the most farm laborers. In addition, the expansion and success of Oregon's agribusiness has also enabled many farm workers to cobble year round work from one site to another. All of us who benefit from the bounty whether as retailers or consumers have much to learn from this event, which I hope will be well-attended.
